Fourteen days. Three hundred and thirty-six hours. Here's how to survive them.

The Two-Week Wait Survival Guide is a short, evidence-based companion to the fortnight that turns reasonable women into amateur symptom analysts. What's actually happening, when testing tells you anything, and how to stay sane while you find out.

One email with the guide, then the occasional note when there's something worth saying. No symptom-spotting content. Unsubscribe any time.

What's inside

Four things worth knowing before you spend another evening Googling "creamy discharge 9 DPO". (DPO means days past ovulation. You're welcome.)

What's actually happening

Implantation lands somewhere between days 6 and 12 after ovulation. Until it does, there's no pregnancy hormone for a test to find, even if everything is going beautifully.

Why symptom-spotting doesn't work

Sore breasts, bloating, cramps, feeling emotional: progesterone causes all of them every month, pregnant or not. Why you'll do it anyway, and how to stop it running the fortnight.

When to test (and when not to)

The earliest a sensitive test can pick anything up, the day results get reliable, and why a negative before day 12 is incomplete information rather than bad news.

The bit that matters most

Alcohol, caffeine, exercise and sex, sorted in a paragraph each. Then the part nobody tells you: how to plan result day so you're not alone with a plastic stick and the silence.

The fortnight, to scale

Days past ovulation. Most of the wait happens before a test can see anything at all.

Ovulation Implantation, days 6–12 Sensitive tests, from about day 10 Reliable result, period due
"I once cried in a hotel spa about a negative test. The other guests left promptly. We had the hot tub to ourselves, which, silver linings."

I'm Sarah. I have a background in psychology, spent years in the two-week wait myself, and wrote this guide because the internet's version of it made everything worse. It's one chapter from a book I've been writing on fertility, the evidence, and keeping your sense of humour while you're at it. Sign up and you'll hear about the book first.

You're not failing at anything. You're just waiting.
